overanalysis of Toby Fox’s “The Baby Is You” y/n

i’m glad you said yes

Toby Fox’s The Baby is You is possibly the greatest piece of ironic parody ever constructed. It exists as a parody of Homestuck, a story that is also a parody of itself, which is a parody of the real world. In the… legendary… plot of The Baby Is You, an unknown male (KARKAT IT’S FUCKING KARKAT) somehow impregnates Dave Strider. The baby is… John Egbert.

To understand the sheer literary absurdity of this, we must comprehend approximately 1% of the plot of Homestuck. Long story short, John Egbert and Dave were born at the same time in a lab, cloned from earlier copies of themself, because of… John’s own actions. And now John is being born from Dave’s magical nonexistent vagina.

We then witness the important part of literary symbolism- Rose Lalonde shows up and is also pregnant despite being gay as fuck. It is revealed that she and Dave were the parents- which is fucking disgusting because gentically they’re brother and sister.

At this point we reach the fabled line: “Oh Rose, I don’t care, being pregnant may be against the rules of the MSPA forums, but shipping us together… is not”. But we also learn that Rose is NOT in fact pregnant- she’s… “just fat”. The symbolism of this is obvious: It symbolises the fundaamental existential angst in the human condition. And also the fact that you can’t ban teenage pregnancies without also banning incest. BUT THERE’S A LOT MORE TO UNPACK

SOTP
