I’m going to be totally honest, having now put any actual thought into the matter, I’m totally failing to model why it’s important to people that titles be special

The thing is that they were also handed out to specific people only. It’s either nothing special and everyone should be able to customize or it is something you earn, but I don’t think it should be given out like it has been. Basically gain favor with a mod to get one.
I do think it’s nice to keep it special to have at least any kind of “reward” for supporting the community, be that monetary or time wise. Also I count performing well in title games as supporting the community too, because having good players raises the skill level of everyone, but I can see that to be a more contentious matter.
It’s near impossible to not name names here tbh, but I’ll try, how is it fair that one has to spend like 20 dollar to get one and someone else just gets one “just because”?
And yes I specifically chose the monetary example here.

if they’re historically special i understand
i’m too new here to really know how much value they hold to people
if it bothers anyone i’ll change mine, cause tbh i don’t care much for it

…but yeah you kinda have a point. I admit, I requested my title and really the only thing I have going here is how long I’ve been here. I didn’t know until now that people paid for titles so I don’t find it that fair that I have one. I’ll switch it to something else.

…In any case, I was title-ified in the first place for being a ToL judge; it’s a different part of the community from the forums, I don’t deny that, but I’d like to hope that the forum community and the ToL community can work together in a positive way despite our occasionally-rocky shared history.

Please don’t use social pressure to force people to change their titles. That’s kinda… elitist and unfair. But yeah
Just FYI, as explanation.
Most titles weren’t given out by demand, but rather as a kind of meme. That was way less disrupting than changing names just for memes. Other titles were given out for special services, when members had done special effort for the forums or for the game.

Actually I can see unfair too now that we are in this situation, but there isn’t really a fair middle ground imo.
Either everyone gets them or they are earned through effort in an ideal end situation.

How were titles handled previously? Were they only given out via donations and events?
I don’t see an issue with that changing if that were the case.

You’re right. This might as well have been a private inquiry between Orange and the mods. It can however be good to poll what the community thinks too, so the mods could possibly make a more informed decision.
…Considering the fact @Emilia changed their name. I’m suspicious as to the fact if they are running away or not.

I was not expecting anyone to manually remove theirs and this was not the intent of this post.
I’m honestly surprised it has happened and I’m not sure that makes me feel good unless we do decide to move back to an awards-based system and go full-on with the whole thing.
