BASTARD SWORD - Interest Check

I’m interested.

if you break down dead interaction down to its barest components
it’s just interacting with dead players
dead players having an influence on the game through mechanics

what opportunities does that yield
what does being dead do to affect the gamestate

there’s bound to be something you can do with dead interaction to make the mechanic interesting

however
in most cases, it serves only to diminish the effect of kills
this isn’t fun to play against since it makes the scum’s plays inherently weaker as long as the dead interaction is substantial in any form
this is amplified further if it extends past purely night dead interaction

and mechanics where dead players decide what [x] role does are often actively uninteresting because players who are dead will tend to not keep high levels of investment for such a small portion of the game

a few ideas that may be interesting which incorporate dead interaction as an idea:

  • lost wolf medium [general use] / scum medium [as a means for communication between scum groups as a part of a greater team]
  • effects enabled off of a target chosen immediately after the player in question’s death (using the vengeful portion of the Templar from SFoL 53 as an example for how such a mechanic might work, but be creative with this) - eliminates issue of really having to continue tuning into the game
  • conditional medium (think something like current mystic in FoL or a medium that can only interact with a certain pool of dead players [either enabled through specific abilities or set in stone at the start of the game])

some standard stuff that can work but is in general pretty trash:

  • limited medium - requires engagement from players post death because they could have a limited, yet possibly important, impact on the game. This is trash because they aren’t really doing much other than tossing a single message usually
  • resurrection (any form) - if not handled properly, this will often put the game into a stranglehold situation where the confirmed town player controls thread (it’s somewhat optimal to let them do this)
  • dead chat voting effects - you’d have to have a good reason to put one of these in so that it’s not just miserable to play with / against

don’t put these in game:

  • full mediums (even if it’s just nightchat) - please god no you know this sucks. I went over earlier why this sucks. It’s going to suck. Don’t do it.
  • TOTALLY WACKY STANDARD REVIVERS WITH NO CONDITIONS OR DECAY - This is for you
  • roles that action while dead - this is the closest on this list to working given that you can just staple on a limited condition to it and call it a day, but if people are asking “why bother” legitimately, there’s something wrong with the design

this is probably my favorite
mainly because these have niches in setups that can’t really be filled by other roles / conditionals in an interesting manner

for lw medium you could instead have them be informed of the entire scumteam once one dies…but that doesn’t have the interesting element of getting to chat with the dead wolf to know what plans are happening and such

added because you can technically get away with this

a medium existing in a setup alongside a few roles that go to a special dead chat when they die
this medium could interact with this dead chat through speech
maybe they have an ability that interacts with the players in the dead chat

could do something interesting

Like, what I want to imitate from Eevee’s games is the feeling of being in the unknown. Like, in a normal match you kind of have a decent idea of what can happen. In an Eevee game, literally anything can happen. I want to replicate this feeling without breaking the game or making people miserable.

If ressurection is added to the game then it’ll be extremely limited.

I absolutely hate this mechanic as it’s way too fucking townsided so if it exists then it likely won’t be like a ToS Retributionist.

this creates an entirely seperate problem though
nobody wants to rand into a slot that 95% never wins even with best reasonable play
