my theory is that the Saint is kind of like, the one guard between the town and the demons
and if they betray that guard by executing the Saint then that gives the demons the power to run through the town rampant or smth
and if they are just killed by the demon then it doesn’t fail the guard, because the town specifically has to betray the Saint by executing them
