they were able to charm the mage while it was on the library
the mage holded only his three most prized possessions
they tried to rob all of them, and in the process broke the enchantment spell
they tried to run, but the mage hit them with a fireball and everyone but a girl who was out of range died
she acted after that in the way I pre-defined he would prize the most, so she didn’t get only not to be killed but also to make him a temporary ally
