Cruel implies a sense of sadism as opposed to horrible, theyāre both very similar but that is the difference.
Im thinking for necklace Marl couldāve imagined strangulation? I wouldnāt call perfume/snake cruel, because the perfume is likely to knock you unconcious before the snake kills you, which is horrible, not cruel

Perfume fits far better with cruel, as forced inhalation isā¦at least decently rude.
