I don’t really see you that much in the argument, so I won’t comment on you. I think Max is town and Marl is scum. The setup makes it so unlikely in the first place that they’re both spies who happened to track in this manner. It doesn’t look scum vs scum and I don’t think Marl + Max could pull that off believeably and I don’t think Marl would choose Max to do that with in the first place.
Marl also is way too: “guess you will lynch me then”. Townies would (or at least should) fight tooth and nail to stay alive, but Marl knows the lynch is justified, so he cannot go there in his mindset. This post in particular.
Additionally, I think scum Marl would be proficient enough to guess the nature of Max’s request for his class and realize he was caught in some way.

the reason i gave for my push on squid was a bid for towncred
as people often read openly scummy things as town
also before you say anything about town not needing towncred, i’ll let my flip speak for itself
or maybe it’s because i know how fucking fishy the evidence looks
and my odds of getting off the hook today are slim to none
