Amelia woke to the sound of a scream. She hesitated for a moment, remembering what she had asked Jgoes, before tiptoeing into the hallway. As she rounded the corner at the hallway’s end, she saw two figures – one lying dead on the floor, in a pool of blood, and the other standing above her, wearing a long, reddish-purple cloak and holding a knife.
Amelia gasped. She recognized the corpse from her time in the castle, but the killer – the killer was someone she knew, a fellow scribe that she’d often discussed court politics with over a glass of ale. Realizing her mistake moments later, she clasped her hand over her mouth.
The figure’s eyes flickered upward, and they pointed their knife at Amelia, narrowing their eyebrows slightly. “Don’t speak of this, do you understand me?” they asked. “If anyone else knows you know, I doubt I’ll be able to protect you.”
Amelia nodded wordlessly.
“Good,” said the figure. “Go back to your room.”
Amelia nodded again, and returned to her room.
“You look troubled,” said Jgoes, taking their place next to her in the throne room.
Amelia shook her head, the words of the oath she had sworn when she had first become a scribe running through her head. “I’m fine, Jgoes,” she said.
“Good,” said Jgoes quietly, shifting their papers around slightly.
“Silence!” called a herald. “King Luxy is arriving!”
The room instantly quieted as the King entered, and everyone present began to kneel. The King looked around the room, before motioning for everyone to get up.
“Today is the day we begin eliminating the conspirators,” said the King. “They may have taken my wife, and many more of our citizens, but they will not take any others. We will find the traitors, and they shall be executed.”
The court burst into applause. Amelia clapped too, remembering as she did what had happened that morning and wondering if they would consider her, too, a traitor.
Jgoes nudged her. “The proceedings are starting,” they said. “Pay attention.”
Amelia nodded, and as the members of the court began to discuss the conspiracy, she frantically noted down what they were saying. Whatever the outcome was, careful records were important.
