You coming to his defense seems weird - do you not agree that this seems like a completely different personality? I know you weren’t really keeping up with the last game, but this is incredibly stark in my eyes.

Ritualist can make a cult member immune to Paladin’s cleanse.
Or, another’s possibility is that the King sent an assist. Either as BD trusting someone or as Cult, protecting their team.
