Isn’t it Frightening?

Naaaah, that’s nothing.

yeah welcome to the internet. Though you are also misinterpreting how things work in general. The owner of any kind of server obviously gets the IPs of anyone connected that isn’t going through a proxy or a VPN. More or less that information doesn’t narrow someone’s location down to more than their local service provider (so roughly the area of a city).

From that information if something was significant enough that authorities were needed, they’d likely contact the authorities for that city, then the authorities would contact that ISP to find which residence has that IP address. In short… you need the co-operation of the ISP to get a useful address, and most likely they won’t co-operate with anyone other than law enforcement.

Exactly this. It’s not as if Xblade themselves can find exactly where you live, and nobody would co-operate with them without a good reason, so the risk of something bad happening due to this knowledge is minimal to non-existent.

See, this is why I live in a home made of tin foil. They can’t track me in my foil!

Right but if all he wanted was to call the authorities he’s set

right, my point is the power to send the police to the door of someone threatening to shoot up a school or commit suicide or something (no idea what actually happened that sparked this topic, I don’t really spend time on discord or wherever this would have come up), does not equate the power to “rob you from knowing when you are home”. As a server owner would not likely be able to narrow you down to less than 1 of 10,000+ homes, and besides that time played in a single game also wouldn’t exactly be a very useful metric for when someone is or isn’t home.

Technically you can track an IP to an address if you commit ohhh a few hundred felonies (hyperbole) and have a ton of illegal equipment. It used to be a lot easier.

Since this site is in conjunction with a paid for computer game I am willing to bet that isn’t a thing

Worry not, there were no threats made and the police were not called on anybody with intent to arrest them.

Rather, they were contacted to help somebody, out of love and respect.

Plus, I handled the situation in a diplomatic manner and I explained to authorities what happened and that I was safe.

All’s well that ends well, as I’d say.

Pretty much everyone on the internet could do it. We basically exchanged our privacy for cat videos. It was worth it.
