Well
That explains some things
okay i do not have the time nor the energy right now to to show why i think the office’s brand of humour often undermines itself because it doesn’t have as cohesive of a writing style as it should but like
trust me i guess
i’m not watching 10 seasons of television i won’t enjoy to prove a point and you’re not going to read 8000 pages of webcomic you won’t enjoy to prove a point
let’s leave it there
I did think it was a very elaborate shitpost
But I thought more D&D campaign than actual straight comedy
see but my point is proveable here and now without watching
your sense of humor =/= if something is objectively funny
i mean the whole point of the trolls is that they’re “here are archetypes of assholes you meet on the internet, what would they be like if they were actual people?”
and like
playing off of archetypes and stereotypes and turning them into actual cohesive characters (mostly, looking at you Gamzee) is classic comedic writing style
anyway let me rephrase my judgement of The Office:
I think its’ overrated and has had a slightly negative impact on sitcoms as a result because the often jumbled styles of comedy the US version tries to combine into one doesn’t scan well for me, and it has spawned countless knockoffs unable to produce the lightning in a bottle that some of its’ writers were able to
i mean just look at Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn 99 and The Good Place. All three are largely produced by people who left The Office and all three of them are fantastic, in my opinon.
that didnt work
and if you like it that’s fine
i did laugh at some of the jokes
but i just felt so uncomfortable throughout because of how jumbled it came across to me as
speaking as a fellow homestuck nerd
I enjoy homestuck
but i have absolutely no clue how i would argue its greatness
like
it’s a bunch of shennanigans and tomfoolery
you get attached to the characters and that’s why I liked it
my personal argument is that while it had a rocky start it was able to craft an actually compelling and complex story based on a collection of inside jokes and memes, and I think if Act 1 and 2 weren’t as mediocre as they are, Act 5 Act 2 wouldn’t hit so hard.
but that’s just me
the thing about all three of those is that they are more cohesive
the good place has a very cohesive story, parks and rec has some large storylines, and b99 does too (although this one is more similar to the office IMO)
the office is meant to be something where you can appreciate it at any episode without context, where for the good place and parks and rec, that can be slightly more difficult.
I do think b99 is better written, however I do think the office is still funnier
I am not some TV critic who watches something and is like “yes, hmmm, the way these shenanigan’s major arcs meld together has above average comedic value. 10 points to gryffindor”
I go “joke funny, laugh at joke”
yeah i get it
i just don’t particularly enjoy the office i guess
i still think there is value to it obviously, and i apologise for my slight overreaction to its’ mentioning
i just don’t like it
what’s the worst part of being a gay african american police officer?
the discrimination
look i’m sorry
my brain works weirdly
as soon as i hear a joke, I laugh and get its’ instinctive value, but I automatically analyse why it’s supposed to be funny just in case I’m finding something funny for no reason, I guess.
