i’m totally lost because i, thankfully, do not live in the United States of America
I was lost until I came across this post and thank fuck I’m lost
I mean I live in Minnesota, which is the one state that actually handles school districts in a reasonable manner by minimizing the extent to which they actually affect anything
there are 1,144 public high schools in Minnesota and people aren’t constrained by their school district in which high school they choose to attend (like, I think it affects your priority if the school is over capacity, but it’s not a hard barrier)
realistically you don’t actually have 1,144 options, driving 5 hours from Saint Paul to Grand Marais isn’t going to be feasible for anyone, but if I had wanted to I could have attended a school in the Minneapolis School District, or in [any of the suburban districts none of whose names you’ll recognize]
again, i dont blame myself for not being able to empathize
The top four schools in illinois (which are some of the best in the country as well), all of which are public and you can test into them, are all within the city of chicago and in range of public transit from anywhere within the city
Yeah Minnesota actually does it well. I happen to live in one of the bigger cities in my state and literally lucked into being able to attend arguably the best public high school in my state so I can’t complain though.
also there’s never any issue of overcapacity
All the seats are alloted based on merit and aptitude; never desire.
yes that was me
of the top four high schools in my state 3 are charters and all 4 are public
they’re all within the Twin Cities metro area but some are in suburban parts of it
yeah, i understand
eh, sorry charter
Chicago charter probs contends for worst in the nation which is probably why im so resentful towards it, along with public school having better opportunities than almost anywhere else in the country.
Like
If public here was trash and charter was excellent, I obviously would not be angry about charter taking money away from public here
But that is not the way it is here
I think it’s really sad you describe going to a certain school as lucking out
‘Lucking out’ here would be going to a school with all your friends from the previous one
why catholic of all religions wtf???
charter schools here aren’t allowed to place merit/aptitude/etc.-based restrictions on who can attend, as a measure to prevent them from turning into Private Schools Lite (they can give preference to siblings and children of staff members, and I’m pretty sure that’s it )
district schools are but Eastview’s website is down so I can’t check if it does
Because it’s the only religious schools we have here bar a very few exceptions
There’s also another thing where if ur extremely brilliant (a good deal more brilliant than anyone who gets into any of those schools as freshmen) and ace the cogat text, you can start high school early in seventh grade at one of those institutions
Those students have better odds at getting into top tier unis from the start
Also no one who wasn’t in that program has any chance of valedictorian at any of those schools
So ye
religious schools are cringe
faith should be something personal to you and not fisted down your throat by school
I had like 30 facebook friends attending top tier unis that i knew from HS, with multiples at each and every one of them (and at least 50 more attending unis better than the one i did)
I unfollowed everyone and just having that was extremely depressing knowing i would never have a reason to contact any of them again, so i deleted my facebook
Eh I moved in the middle of high school so I didn’t know anyone anyway. I would’ve preferred staying at a worse school if I didn’t have to move, but I didn’t have a choice
Facebook (and insta) is an incredibly depressing environment where you only see the good side of people’s life and it makes you feel way worse in comparison.
fuck fb
