Merc is far too powerful when contacted to Cult/Unseen

If they leave immediately maybe have it random?

But rng is bad sooo idrk what to do

They could either choose immediately (say have the next phase, whether night or day to decide) or they are informed of their mercs existence D0 and can constantly toggle who their successor is in preparation for when they die.

What if merc just got a random member of the same faction. This removes any confirmability of the merc.

Edit: Iā€™m still iffy on this as itā€™s just ā€œan extra faction memberā€

The idea isnā€™t bad, but what is it trying to accomplish?

It seems like it really just makes it so the Merc can still use their abilities after the first one dies, because theyā€™ll still end up allied to the same faction for the most part.

Neutral contracts could be messy.

It means we can have the old merc, which I think most ppl preferred, but avoid the bussing/gamethrowing problem.

But whatā€™s the point if they still end up with one faction?

Because your target chooses there is more deceit involved. A dead BD target may not know another confirmed BD or believe a fake claiming scum resulting in you switching sides. If your contract was neutral you can have a new contract unlike before, but your dead neutral will probably give you someone completely random as a new contract as they have likely already lost so donā€™t care.

Granted if your original target was unseen/cult 99% of the time you will be guaranteed to have your next target as their scum buddy so thereā€™s not that much change there. Then again I think having an individual target as opposed to a faction is more interactive for the mercenary.

Neutrals contracts would still have the merc suicide. Alch and nk are strong, and a merc solves a lot of issues plaguing sorc and reaper.

I like that direction comparatively I guess

What happens if they donā€™t choose?

:man_shrugging:

Well the biggest issue with that is when you allow the person to choose the Mercā€™s next contract.

If you leave it for after they die, then a lot of people just wonā€™t do it and will leave immediately. Or what happens if they disconnect. Would they just get a member of the same faction? This would lead to people leaving without selecting one on purpose.

If you have it something they choose while still alive, then that means it confirms they have a Merc. The only solution to that is to constantly have it there, which would be useless clutter for most player. It also leads to the possibility of people just ignoring it, since the odds of them needing it would be low.

Can we just give the merc a new random target?

If it popped up immediately after their death, this may be avoided

Still, definitely a good point.

I think mercā€™s new win condition is what makes her too swingy.

I suggest giving merc her old win condition of ā€œMake sure your contract survivesā€. But also adding a passive:
ā€œIf your contract would die at night you will die in their placeā€
Maybe even make it so it works on princeā€™s execution as well.

Everyone keeps saying that the new Merc is swingy, but the spawning system takes into account what their starting contractā€™s faction is.

It is a lot more consistent than the old Merc, who just had a completely random contract at the start. Also the fact that the Merc could easily contract the Prince.

The win condition doesnā€™t matter. Itā€™s the force pardon and still living after their contract dies.

That passive could also help against the ā€œstill living after contract diesā€ thing.

I would have it pop up immediately, and they must choose someone by the end of the phase (if itā€™s night or day depends on when their target died.)

After thinking about it i think the best thing to do if they donā€™t choose a target is to let the mercenary then choose a target instead. As their original target gets first priority to choose, the merc still cannot bus their target as they canā€™t rely on them not choosing anyone, so it would not change anything.
