Landmines are most effective at the middle of the map, the further away from the middle you are, the more and more the forcefield will close in and thus negate the effectiveness of the landmine.

It was never specified that the border will go towards the center, and we do have 8 turns (i.e. 8 moves) to run away from the border.

Correct, the map will be randomly reduced. So like for example, it might be reduced on the north and east during one round.

In games like PUBG and Free Fire, the location for the final showdown is random to avoid just heading to center all the time.
