Earlier he claimed to not level up because he performed a day action
However, if you check the FAQs on the class card threat, Day actions DO NOT affect your ability to level up. Which means he just straight up lied.

he didn’t know he leveled up because HE DIDNT level up, because he killed Vulgard.
