I don’t think the original intent of something is important in evaluating whether to keep something. While it’s true this compromises game flow, I feel like that is a trade-off most people who signed up for this game is willing to take, considering that they signed up to the game knowing that these were the phase lengths. While it may not have been the original intent, night phase also gives people time to rest and gives mafia time to collect their thoughts
