If you are scum, you could just do you and your partner was witched, and you claimed it.
This way witch knows 2 mafia members for one witching.

That also explains that you doing you could be killing Derps.

Like no witch would direct someone at derps rather than Squid.
However if your partner visited Squid and you killed Derps, it is viable.

My scenarios actually are trying to explain what happened and they are doing damn good job connecting all dots in pretty much possible way.

Like…
a) XYZ and Arete are scumteam.
b) XYZ was witched to Squid
c) Arete killed Derps
d) Arete claims witched instead of XYZ, so witch knows 2 mafia at once.
e) Marshal saw Arete killing Derps

That’s why Arete visiting Derps despite claiming witched makes sense.
