I replaced my last school year with a prep course to make a tl;dr
The concept of the class is also alien to anyone who studies normally here (3 years of high school instead of 2 years of high school > prep course)
There are no honors courses here btw.
Just read the term now in Wikipedia’s prep course page to see if the translation was right
The idea is pretty stupid
Pre-selectionated seats is an odd concept here
In public schools there isn’t even an official seat list and where you seat is just marked by how your colleagues respect it
In private schools they normally see where you sat on D1 of the new year and lock the place for you
The whole idea of honors/advanced courses is that those who want harder course material can take it
Much like college, not everyone needs higher levels of education. The idea is to allow those who do to take advantage of it, instead of trying to apply a “one-size-fits-all curriculum” to make every student run at the same pace.
Staying more time studying by yourself than in classroom is an acceptable approach here
Just googled “prep course” and it sounds like it’s basically just school?
Not sure what non-prep courses would be, sans things directly playing into careers meant for those who are going to career training instead of college.
While those courses are few and far between here, are they the norm where you live?

In general a high school honors course wouldn’t increase the amount of time you spend in the classroom at all
The concept seems dumb because if you want to go more deeper, you simply do it for yourself
Also how does three years of high school work? We have four, and generally graduate at around 18. Where do you cut that year?
And prove it how? It helps you get farther if others know you’re doing that. Such as college admissions officers or employers.
Plus, it provides structure to help support people who wish to dive deeper, rather than simply telling them to do it themselves.
Even if you literally just infodump everything (specially in content-heavy classes like sociology or history) it would be humanly impossible to go deeper unless you accepted learning three new concepts every physics class as well
