That means that even the person who wrote the outgoing emails knew about the Mastermind. Maybe we’re assuming incorrectly that the person who made the simulation kill and the Mastermind are the same person…

I thought we were told that people outside the simulation did know about the mastermind, but they didn’t necessarily know exactly who it was.

There would still be 19 subjects + Amelia in that case. Plus, Minoru said before he died that the Mastermind was an intended feature of the simulation.

They probably expected us to leave at some point, and didn’t want us or the people working on the simulation to be able to interfere with it by knowing who to kill.
