Part of the challenge in the World Solar Challenge is to design a safe vehicle for traversing the Australian Outback.
Unfortunately, two of our competitors, Twente and Sonnenwagen Aachen, were caught up in high winds today and crashed. Both drivers were injured, and at least one was hospitalized.
As a team that has been in their exact shoes in the past, we built Electrum to withstand the high winds, and we’re proud of that fact. But that doesn’t take away from our sadness for our fellow teams and especially their drivers.
It’s a rough spot for the race to be in. In an attempt to reduce other crashes, the race officials are imposing a speed limit on all remaining cars. Hopefully either this limit or their own cautiousness can prevent any other accidents for the remainder of the race.
Remember, safety first.

Twente’s car was totaled, and they’re out.
Sonnenwagen was able to repair their car and is back on the road.
Luckily it seems neither driver was injured beyond a chrsory check-up.

I don’t know, and considering the driver that was “hospitalized” was only sent for a check-up (out here, the clinic is the hospital), I’m not going to speculate further.
Both cars are confirmed to have rolled.
Both drivers are confirmed to be okay.
The race continues.
I can answer that, according to my calculations around 80-85 km/h at the time of accident.
But yeah, orange is not gonna win this unless there is gonna be more crashes.
That for sure.

We believe that the standings will reflect those who are best able to build a safe, reliable solar car that follows the regulations of the race and can complete the course the fastest.
That is all I will say on that.
Also, Twente was losing ground fast, so it’s hard to say if they were about to fall back massively after overracing.
