That’s because despite being a finite resource, they’re actually very useful since they’re strong. You’re expected to at least have one person capable of casting healing word because it basically serves the purpose potions do in JRPGs, to heal the lowhp guy so they don’t die.
They’re only 5sp.
Stealing from the party is a good way to initiate PVP imo

Seriously, don’t steal from the party.
You are all wandering together to help yourselves and even an evil/chaotic character would not because they know that they need those people to accomplish their objectives.

Also pretty much everything is limited in D&D in some fashion. Especially healing.
In JRPGs you can just have your healer spend 5 mp to heal and forget about it entirely. And then you can immediately go to an inn and rest, which you can’t always do in a d&d setting, resting can sometimes be riskier than just continuing on

In JRPGs everything is made so you’re always awesome, you never go really out of anything and if you lost, you just need to kill some slimes until your numbers are high enough
In D&D you have to manage recurses. In 5e particularly you’re more of an adventurer than of a hero.
I think cleric should have the same magic scheme as paladin but turned to heals/buffs-debuffs
Paladin you have some amazing spells to aument battle output but if you don’t want them you could swap them for a spell to conjurate a horse instead
