The definition for the noun: an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal.
The definition for the verb:insert or squeeze (someone or something) between two other people or things, typically in a restricted space or so as to be uncomfortable.
So if we go by the noun

Now if we go with the act of sandwiching it’s the same out of principle that tacos, burritos, and pop tarts are one item holding a bunch of things not two. Subs/hotdogs are in a schrodinger’s cat like state until the first bite(in which case its either a sandwich or not is derived) in which if the bread was cut too much or it ripped it’s a sandwich but if not and it’s one piece of bread

Would you call a subway sandwich (one piece of bread connecting the two parts) not a sandwich even though it is commonly referred to as a sandwich?
