there was third edition and people didnt like it so they made a better version of it holding most of the baseline and fundamentals the same. Or at least thats what i assume, I wasnt into DND until right when 5th dropped

Well its technically just 3.5e, 4e, 5e. Standing for 3.5 edition, fourth edition, and fifth edition. Its just people have different ways to shorten it
