The young squire, barely seven years old but bright and eager, had always admired the older man, and although he was too young to formally start his training in the service of the crown, he had eagerly followed the man around, badgering him with incessant questions about battles he had fought in, jousts he had triumphed in, innocents he had saved. There were those who said that the shadow of the conspiracy had touched the hearts of everyone, and although the Squire wasn’t sure what that meant, the man was unaffected; when he saw the squire, he would tell him of the importance of honor, of giving your life before letting an innocent die, and of ensuring that you never harm one who is not your enemy.
So it came to be, that morning, that the squire, intending to figure out why the man was late for training, instead tripped over him lying in the hallway, his sword by his side.
“Wake up,” said the squire, shaking him. “Wake up!”
The squire recalled the man’s stories of death, and looking more closely, he realized the truth. The Knight, his hero, was gone.

“Come on,” said the Archer. “That target? That target is as large as a house, I could hit it from a mile off. Give me something smaller.”
“How about this?” said someone in the crowd, holding up a single ripe grape.
“Very well,” said the Archer. “Come on down, come on down.”
The crowd cheered, as the woman stepped down from the stands and into the ring. The Archer carefully positioned her fingers around the grape. “It’s important you don’t get hurt, see,” he said.
The Archer strode to the other end of the arena. Carefully, he lined up his bow, drew back the string, and released an arrow. It flew through the air, piercing the grape and sticking in the back wall of the arena. The crowd collectively released a breath, then burst into raucous applause, as the Archer took a bow.
But all that was gone, now. The young talent of the Archer, extinguished as surely as the corpse lay on the floor before the throne room.
