Anywhere/everywhere i think the key might be
I climb on one of the chairs, despite being incredibly weak in both might and soul, and search the ceiling for any sign of the Key. I do this not for myself but for the others, being such a moral monk, leading me to search with a fervour unkown to everyone else.
I observe the room, giving myself a mental image of the room.
I look out for anything of interest or out of the ordinary.
I keep hold of the Knife, for protection.

I pick up any lose Knives, and study the Knives further, I also make a mental list of who else still has a Knife.
I also sign at NuclearsBurrito’s inability to casually look at a room.

Seriously though. How do I fail to see the room. I wasn’t specifically looking for something (not even the key). What would failing even look like? Did I spontaneously go blind!?

You failed to see the detailed Knife, (I manged to see it as I had specifically kept mine and observed for ordinary things)
I didn’t exactly drop mine and I wasn’t looking for things. And I care because failing (somehow) would mean I can’t do anything else like those other things you just mentioned.
(Just so you know I will be mixing up my gameplay with roleplay)
You failed to mention the Knife at all, which is the only noticeable thing we physically have.
