Why is Homestuck so big?

answer to why it’s so long: because it’s an overcomplicated time travel narrative involving four seperate alternate universes that create each other through a bootstrap paradox formed of video games
answer to why it’s so popular for what should be something nobody has ever read: it was in the right place at the right time
Short answer: there was interest, author was committed, and a healthy dose of several different plots being introduced
It’s American, right?
I mean
This is technically also an answer
best answer as to what homestuck actually is
it’s the story of a group of four friends who are the first to play a new video game, which turns out to cause the end of the world and gets their homes stuck in an alternate dimension
the four kids have to quickly learn how to play the game and defeat the various enemies within the game, all the while being helped and hindered by a group of 12 eccentric aliens who played the game before them
And then there’s also a thousand other things that exist but they surprisingly enough don’t dump that all at inopportune points
It has a fucky way it tells its story though
Jumps over the place a lot
let’s not forget it’s told through the second person through about 3 different framing devices
Homestuck is best read start to finish rather than jumping in at a given point (like at a specific act or something) because author loves bringing back earlier plot points
although the second person thing is not as bad as the second person usually is since after Act 3 most of the time it’s told through people DMing each other over weirdass discord variants
yes do not skip the first few acts even if they are a lot worse than the rest of the comic
irritatingly everything in those acts becomes relevant eventually
even stupidass shit like Dave being a photographer
(Ok maybe you can cut out very beginning)
Wack.
okay here’s all you need to hear from Act 1
Reminds me of how little I know about these “popular” things. I have plenty of friends who are huge musical fans, but I know nothing about them. Not a single title.
this is the funniest thing from act 1 and it’s not even particularly funny compared to… well, everything else in the comic, but also the general standard of funniness
still makes me chuckle every time i read it, though
i feel this
like
movies, shows, most new music? i got nothing
in terms of running gags? it’d have to be something that undermines the actual plot and action of the comic
what i’m saying is fuck Karkat’s reaction to [redacted]
