I think monsters in general are never done well as villains.
Because from what I’ve observed, to most ‘monster’ implies a mindless brute creature most of the time. Which is a boring trope.

can I blame JRR Tolkien for ruining the standard high fantasy villain by making everybody want to rip off Sauron?

in fact, can I blame JRR Tolkien for the state of storytelling in general, and how his style has made both movie and book plots catastrophically disorgonised in recent years.

This also brings up the interaction of what happens if a duke and torturer jail each other

Solution: both jails go through :sunglasses:

i’ve said this before but I think the Lord of the Rings trilogy is massively overrated, but I think the reason it was so popular is because the original hook is actually really cool and a good premise- a small group transports a dangerous and madness-inducing artifact into the heart of the enemy’s domain to defeat them while being searched for at all times.

However, Tolkien always had a problem with pacing, and it gets much MUCH worse in the Two Towers, in which much of the story is comprised of subplots that appear to be done out of obligation only.
