Simon opened the drawers, unlocking the fourth one and opening it too. The first drawer contained nothing. The third contained a golden ring. The third contained a diamond. The fourth contained a book. James went to the window and examined it. There were three bars, one of which were loose. The window was about a meter above your head when you jumped.

Alrightā€¦ maybe we can move the desk to under it if we can break the two bars.
Perhaps we have to put the diamond ā€” why is there a real gem in dungeon ā€” on the ring, but I donā€™t see how that will do anything. In any case, the next logical move is to see if thereā€™s a small hole in the bottom of the now unlocked drawer.

examine gets you a once over.
you need to search to do stuff like looking inside of something.
of course you can specify that you are examining the inside of it or the outside, but that takes 2 separate actions to do what 1 could just as easily
