Hot take

“Good reads” is not nearly as correlated to “good town play” as people think

Agree.
Me not detonating Vulgard on impulse within 5 seconds of SoD in SF5 is the definition of perfect townplay
for me

Now I think they’re important

But I don’t think “had good reads” on its own is ever good enough

If they had good reads and did something with them, great

If not, what’s the point?

As such I request all future instances of “good reads” must also include a bit about how they used said reads effectively to further the village

The Prince play of Italy in Fol 27 was outstanding.

Alice in Short Fuse IV

I’ve been trying to mostly stay away from things that are just ‘had a lot of good reads,’ because that’s not really generalizable – like, if most people could catch the entire scumteam twelve hours into D1 we wouldn’t need this thread

However, I do actually think several elements of her play in that game are things that other people could apply to their own game:

  • She specifically searched for ways to clear PoE villagers, even those who would traditionally be LHF and therefore easy misexe’s. We the wolves were, to steal an expression, boxed in.
  • She actively defused TvT violence between Wazza and Marshal (who were tunnelling each other), rather than just saying ‘this is probably TvT’
  • She reevaluated her reads – there was a brief period of a couple hours when she was misclearing me, but she quickly reevaluated that after re-reading my Iso and noticing that I was TMIing my partners as such
  • she didn’t assume that anyone a wolf said anything negative about ever was therefore town

Solic – SFoL 55: Old Ruins

Even though he was Mercenary (a Neutral) in that game, he townsided for pretty much the entire game, so I think he qualifies.
He did a lot of things right.

  • He kept posting, pushing, and prodding. A very proactive approach which also resulted in getting himself townread easily. Wolves tried and failed to kill him.
  • He eventually reached the correct conclusions and pushed the right people while also avoiding pushing town. This was only made possible because he kept interacting in the thread.
  • He constantly evaluated people. Solic didn’t get locked into any reads he had, he kept considering options and adapting his reads. Despite having some incorrect takes early on, he didn’t get tunnelvisioned.
  • He kept pushing people to play when they didn’t. It’s an underrated skill to have as town – getting people involved. Your posts can be really good, but when you’re unable to make people listen / contribute, then you can’t really yeet the wolves by yourself.
  • Eventually, he endgamed and took one of the townies he was contracted to (protecting mechanically as part of his townsided wincon) to victory, alongside the neutral king. Despite having to play for a longer time than anyone else, he didn’t just stop playing. It was especially necessary to have people playing when most of the town were dead and there were still people like the NK to get rid of.

Overall, a solid town performance throughout.

sulit in JK9

This is a relatively minor thing, but she overrid the wishes of her hydra partner to self-pres at EoD when she was an execution candidate, resulting in a rand between her and a member of the scumteam and specifically resulting in the member of the scumteam being executed

Marshal in Randomizer

Marshal (and many other townies) did a lot of things right that game, but the specific one I wanted to highlight is him actively working with other people he trusted to develop his reads, which allowed him to improve his read accuracy and thereby avoid tunnelling the Priest. It’s easy to fall into the trap of assuming your reads are always right, and that you should never consider the input of others, and he didn’t let that happen

Group Town Performance – Randomizer

Was the setup townsided? Yes. Does Town still deserve the nomination? Yes. Going mostly off of social cues, supplemented by mechanics used correctly (such as the ways people claimed rather than the claims themselves), they had incredibly accurate reads and found each other very easily. While both wolves were close to getting cleared, they never quite managed to get themselves fully cleared, and it was difficult for them to do much in a highly villagery thread, mechanics aside. With so many villagers correctly finding each other, they yeeted the NK on day 2, and would have probably yeeted a wolf on day 3 had the wolves not conceded beforehand.

Also, a ton of villagers successfully contributed in ways that made them readable and allowed town to have excellent teamwork. I don’t think there is a better candidate for a group town play nomination, other than NDFM, perhaps.

BlueStorm from NDFM

Whereas Geyde in that game played very well but had some minor hiccups (mainly in locking Math as V), BlueStorm filled in the gaps with reasonable takes both before and after their death that left essentially no stone left unturned. They were on the money and cleared quite a few LHF villagers (?) who would otherwise have been food for the wolves desperate for more town flips.

“Marl in many town games iirc”

A follow-up on that, from the perspective of a wolf who was caught by him day 1 and needed to kill him.

Solic was the reason scum pushed for a mechanic that gave them a strongman kill on night 1. I repeat, Solic was the reason the wolves desperately wanted a strongman kill just to remove him from the game on night 1. On day 1, he managed to get himself townread, had multiple wolves nailed, never relented, correctly interpreted several of his accusers as scum, and more.

Aside from read accuracy, he was also more than willing to work with others instead of just screaming alone. That is what really makes this nomination important. He had influence in the thread, and having that while fighting wolves who are actually posting and trying to seize control is praiseworthy.

“People who play good keep away with PRs”
This isn’t that frequent but there are people who are very good about this important portion of playing any game with particularly strong town power roles

Group Town Performance – Ritual Mafia 1

This is a very old game, but one that really stuck in my mind. Town was incredible that game. Perfect sacrifices, perfect yeets, every part of their play was on the money. They caught wolves early, they found each other, they cleared LHF villagers, they kept pushing and the wolves were forced to concede because of how good the town was. When there was a possibility of a wolf infiltrating the towncore on day 1, one of the villagers used their day ability to force the yeet onto that wolf (which might deserve an individual nomination, even though the player in question isn’t playing here anymore). And of course, the town bounced their reads off of one another a lot. Cooperation was the key to victory. Wolves couldn’t blend in when the village was doing so well, and consistently.
