It’s not an ambiguous soft alone as it also fits in with Dat’s reads being that his strongest scumread before Merc’s fakeclaim was James and he wanted to lynch him, so there was no reason for him to not jail James. Like, who else who Dat have jailed other than James?
My theory here with the idea that James is a villager? Merc wasn’t planning on living either way being that Luxy/Set/Red/I was on her wagon and that if Dat/You/Hja/Her piled up on James’ wagon then he’d just self-pres and she’d get maj’d. My guess here is that she only claimed in order to bait out a CC where Dat made himself stupidly obvious and allowed the last wolf to kill him at night. Merc fakeclaiming and trying to shift onto V!James would just further spew him as town as she’d be dead anyone from Dat’s CC.
Re-reading how EoD1 went it makes Hja looks even worse for not questioning how the interactions between Merc/Dat went and immediately knowing Merc was a fakeclaiming wolf. Also, first post fits in with my initial theory on Merc.
