I’m listening to the soundtrack for the musical adaption of Jekyll and Hyde for some reason, and Jekyll spends most of it expressing the opinion that everyone has a Secret Repressed Dark Side that just wants to hurt people
and I think the narrative assumes the audience agrees with this but it seems kind of self-evidently false? and I could be wrong about what the narrative expects the audience’s perspective to be, like, this is in fact the perspective being associated with Henry Jekyll, who is not exactly being portrayed as entirely reasonable
so I guess my question is ‘is this the normal opinion that most people have’ (/am I the weird one here)
I mean even i have morbid thoughts sometimes
But its acting on them that makes you evil

But I don’t think everybody wants to hurt people, but I think a lot more people are capable of it then they let on

well i won’t say it’s the normal opinion
but it’s an opinion that the audience is groomed to have while watching the show

I would be inclined to agree.
But not with this. Most people get tempted and most people would do unethical things given a chance, but if you actively want to hurt people, that’s… Not normal whatsoever. Some might consider some stranger/messed up things, but if they want to just cause others harm and this will is unprompted, I would say that such people need serious mental help.
