Discussion: How Can We Promote The Use Of Social Deduction?

I’d like to think that but also I’ve been hearing about “cleaning up code” for almost a full year now sooooooo

Read the stuff posted in #dev-blog (on the discord)
To understand 1. why it was necessary and 2. what exactly had to be done
We also did had some patches last year which included some meta changes, qol or stability and security patches. While nothing of that is so appealing to players like a fullfledged balance patch, its improving the gameplay experience a lot.

I’m not questioning the why

Just understandably doubtful that we’ll ever hit more than a fraction of the speed at which updates used to release.

I don’t think hoping we continue to make that fraction larger from here on out is either unreasonable or negative, so I would hope there is no need to try and correct it.

I dont see forums having any influence rn on the game, but go ahead

I don’t follow?

Easiest way to do that is simply have confirming classes be hard enough that by the time you’ve confirmed a critical mass of players you’ve already lost.

Conversion helps with this quite a bit.

Scary but true

Someone already pointed this out some where but the easiest way to promote social deduction is make all games cult not unseen

On the other hand, the more closely-matching Unseen converts in theory force you to rely on noticing behavioral shifts more than the fact that someone can no longer perfectly emulate their claim

Yes, but the cult aren’t as harshly punished for being mechanically harmed

I don’t think it’s as simple as “Cult are better for social deduction” or “Unseen are better…”

They have different strengths and weaknesses in that sense, so while a direct comparison is technically possible there is a lot to go over in order to reach a conclusion.

unseen converts more closely matching makes no difference, you get demoted to assassin immediately in practice and cult has enough uses to mimick their starting class until they die

To promote social deduction, make investigatives less common. Reduce feedback. Have the game where by the time you can confirm everyone, it’s too late.

I think ToL is at a good spot with the number of investigatives, you want D2 to begin with leads and not VFR.

What I think could improve is giving scum better defenses, especially NK getting outed by maid, and make “they’re scorned” a more viable defense since disguises are rare and the scorned is like “gg im scorned that was a disguise” as soon as they get their second mark which kind of ruins the whole thing.

ToL needs less invests, because it needs less information. Less mechanical info is better for Socialness

I don’t see any need to reduce invests, it’s not like people have anything to go on but your word. There’s no “mechanical” proof you are telling the truth, invests are easiest to fake. Again you don’t want to reduce invests to the point where every game is D2 VFR because nobody has info

If someone claims that X is scum, you have a thunderdome where it’s most probable of one of them being scum.

Invest results aren’t explicit like “X is scum” though, they are on a spectrum from stuff like flirt to stuff like investigate

the only exception I can think of is surveille where the result isn’t “Assassin”

Literally what is Sheriff and Pally’s results

“You will investigate X tonight.”
“X is a member of the Unseen!”

The wording is just for immersion, the actual info you get is “X is Unseen or X is Framed or you were Mindwarped”
