I think it depends. A lot of writers are employing a fair amount of poorly-written tokenism regarding race/gender/sexual orientation. Like, a lot of LGBT characters are written well like Krem from Dragon Age: Inquisition, but then you have nonsensical “LOOK HERE, THEY’RE QUEER” stuff such as Soldier: 76 being revealed to have a male lover from nothing.

i resent the accusation of being a communist, since there were actual problems in the USSR that did stem from marxist theory, but yes capitalism is bad and yes fine let’s change subjects

see the thing is that they could very easily have shot two versions of that star wars scene in which there are the Unobtrusive Lesbians™ in the background, one in which they are way more prominent and one to send to China

we can’t forget that the hollywood execs aren’t having their hand forced by a foreign power
they’re choosing to participate in that kind of backhanded “representation” by themselves
