Opinion on the Pretender?

Since it’s been a few hours since the release, and the ability to be played in game. What are your opinions on the newest class introduced in tol?

  • Not Viable in game ( basically fool 2.0)
  • Good Idea on a new class but not implemented well
  • A great new addition to neutrals.

Pretender is fine imo. It makes king’s abilities less making him seem either good/evil/poss. Now you have to actually scum read him, instead of pointing, and decide fate usage.(exeing prince d2)

Which is what was needed to in my opinion

I’m waiting for the moments a GK is forced to DF execute

Same here

It’s gonna be funny

Bd screams “Report GK!!!”

Till they realize there’s a pretender

True, but it can be done

You just need tons of coordination

Pretender should get its own king class. Litterally any neutral can win as neutral king (besides NK’s). Pretenders only chance at winning as neut king with no guards is to make neut bonds witb alch, nk, etc…

Yes i voted its not viable, but not as an idea. Frankly, i dont think its good of an idea, but its not bad. It helps EKs and Possesor into kings but thats about it. Until they patch it into a better, more fun class i will think its a bad class

It can be tweaked but on the whole I really like it

I like it in principle, but I still don’t see, how it’s abilities get it towards it’s goal. so he whipes all royal bloods off the board and gets the king executed… Now what?

BD’s going to vote for the person with the strongest claim, so… people with logs with verifyable stuff, unseen/cult is obviously going to vote for their candidate… so… pretender has his own vote, which is worth double, but is probably still the least likely person to become king. doubly so in the event that he gave away his existance to get a good king killed.

So what I’m hearing is it takes some convincing others

Good it would be too easy otherwise

maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see at as much as “convincing others” as “having someone vouch for you”.

Hypothetically if one of the other candidates is

  1. phys that healed someone
  2. observer with logs
  3. butler that someone else can confirm the occupation.
  4. Knight that has CSed someone
  5. alch with a confirmed heal or evil kill
  6. Sheriff/Pali with a recorded catch.

Against any of those what do you claim to get BD to vote for you? scrapping royals from the list as those are the ones the pretender can actually do something about.

all the convincing in the world means nothing next to one person vouching for what you did. Something BD, cult/unseen and even most neutrals have option for. Not so for the pretender. The closest to a good option I see is the pre psycho king NK play

“Hey guys, I’m pretender and I killed the king vote for me because at least you can be sure I’m not Evil king”.

Fair enough - but how do we fix that issue?

I don’t think more kills is the best option. Maybe something that prevents votes for somebody from counting?

Yeah I’d say some kind of extra trickery in the election. To me it seems like the pretender was planned during the old Royal blood mechanics… where being the last RB was an auto win of the election. Maybe a passive for exactly that… “If no other royal steps up win the election by default”. To me that’s the only thing that really can connect the “kill royal blood” abilities as something that actually goes towards getting elected. as with the change, royal blood is second to semi-confirmability or having informed teammates.

I think the meta will shift to allowing a pretender to usurp the throne for free in certain situations. I don’t know what buffs you could provide to make them confirmable. Maybe a 1 day maidspy? Royals will be less likely to claim to king as they will die if there is a pretender present. Could help kill the whisper meta

I honestly think pretender is the best addition of this patch and it can do a lot. I think waiting to see how people react to it before making drastic changes are needed.

Sounds fair enough to me, although if the other royals are limited in number that may end up being a touch easy.

I suppose then surviving as the King is the big challenge.

Just claim BD and no one is voting the Alch

agreed alc is the worse of the claims… but still slightly above “person claiming BD that has done nothing that anyone else can possibly vouch for”, doubly so if they already know there is a pretender (IE if they execute the king that decide fate executed the prince and he flips good king they 100% know there is a pretender).

BD will still take an alc or merc over a pretender… because without guards, you know he’s going to prioritize not upsetting evils.

That line of reasoning might be valid. But in practice no one cares

I like the concept of it, but it seems a bit too hard to play as(I haven’t gotten a chance to play it yet though, my opinion might change once I do). Here’s how I would rework it:

Pretender

Neutral special
Passive 1: Determination - Immune to death at night.

Passive 2: Overthrow - During the election for a new king, votes for you count twice. Tied votes will go in your favor(unless another player has an anti-tie passive and is tied with you. Then it will actually be a tie)

Night Ability 1: Intercept(Uses: 3) - Force your first target to target your second. They will not be notified that they were redirected. Bypasses redirection immunity. Can target the king.

Night ability 2: Eavesdrop(Uses: 2)(Note: maid spy and cult spy should also be renamed to this) - Send a maid to receive the contents of all whispers tomorrow.

Day ability 1: Bewilder(Uses: 2)(invoker’s bewilder should also be reworked to this) - Disable your target’s day abilities for the rest of the day. They will not be notified until they attempt to use an ability. Still consumes a use of the ability they were attempting to use.

Day Ability 2: Bribe(Uses: Unlimited?) - Force your target to execute or pardon the accused. They will not be notified until the results are shown. Affects decide fate.

Reasoning:

  • Resolve- Helps it survive

  • Overthrow - Gives a punishment for executing pretenders since pretenders aren’t anti-BD.

  • Intercept - Can change the king and royals’ targets. Can also frame investigatives.

  • Eavesdrop - Gives pretender noble as a fakeclaim

  • Bewilder - discourages day confirmation, helps Pretender claim noble, and is a nerf to prince(prince’s abilities should have counterplay)

  • Bribe - Allows the pretender to frame everyone’s votes, not just the king.

Pretender is special
