Coincidentally I recently played a couple games there. And yes, they have a very similar format. In some ways even better because they have an automatic vote counting system.

However, I personally wouldn’t recommend Mafia451 because it’s not very active. I’m not sure if this is normal or they are just going through a phase. But it was like being in a bizarro mafia world. I was like the top poster in both games, sometimes even double the posts of the next person. I was getting town cored. Can you believe that? :smiley: It was so strange.

I agree with those who say we shouldn’t completely scrap the alt system. I think it will need to change in stages. First, we should go ahead with allowing speculation on alts. This removes the issue where people can use alts to shield themselves from meta talk. Yes, there might be some questioning of every new player because there’s suspicion of them being an alt. People can ask if they are an alt or even state a suspicion about them being a specific person. The new/alt player can decide to reply or not. If they deny it or say they don’t care to comment, then people should respect that and allow everyone to make their own judgment. People shouldn’t harass anyone. We would just fall back to common rules of respect and allow mods to judge whether the player is being harassed.

After a while, many people will likely give up on the novelty of playing an alt. As time goes by, people will more likely assume that new players are just that, someone new and not necessarily an alt. Then people like Solic and Cloned who’ve successfully used alts can occasionally go back to using them without people being highly suspicious.

Oh, but besides the automatic vote counting system, one other good thing I liked about their site was the #friendly games. They tag games as #friendly when they follow a set of rules about maintaining a friendly environment. It was rather nice for that, especially coming in as a new player.

If it doesn’t go against any general rule about threats or harassment, then a player can make that statement. But other players can judge whether they think it’s fair or helping town or whatever. If it gets to the point of harassment, the host can make the call.

Let’s say we make alt speculation public - how long do we have to wait for things to settle then before re-evaluating?

I feel like giving them a third of a year has shown that the majority of cases have been harmful, the proposed change removes like the only thing going for them right now, and the playerbase was always too small to make them effective at that goal anyways.

But sure keep them around because two or three people can make them not suck for everyone else/lol funny ha :man_shrugging:

also I suppose I could also argue that “escaping meta” isn’t even a goal that it should fall on the shoulders of the site to support in the first place

but at this point it kinda feels like people are deadset on looking at this from the perspective of what they find amusement from in the moment and not in terms of what makes the most sense in the grand scheme of things

I disagree with you that it doesn’t work for not being meta read. I don’t want to perpetually change how I play, but occasionally I’d like to play in a different direction or at least be able to do so without being read to filth for it. I don’t want to go through 5/6 games of it first becoming “within my range”

If I don’t alt, there is a strong push from other players to just act exactly how I would act as previous town Solic and I typically default towards that, because it’s a path of least resistance. There is another layer in here of the amount of effort that is expected of me that I most definitely don’t want to meet all the time. I’m thankful for the alt system helping me push past these expectations. In addition it also prevents some SPKs, so that certain players can play past day 1 for once.

I think having alts on this site also has a site wide benefit on expanding reading beyond just metareading which some players do. I acknowledge that you have valid concerns, but for me personally, I’d wish the system stay in place.

I also agree with you that public discussion of who is possibly alting is not good for the system. I don’t see what that solves at all and it would break away from the actual game discussion in my opinion.
