FoL Awards 2021 - Nominations Thread

This is the thread for awards nominations! Please be sure to include (1) who you are nominating, (2) what award you are nominating them for, and (3) a short description of why you are nominating them.

Please ensure that all discussion is strictly on-topic.

Credit to the Mafia Universe mods for creating the system that I’ve modelled these awards off of.

Rules

  • Anyone who has played at least one game on FoL can nominate another member for an award. Anyone who has played or hosted at least one game on FoL is eligible to receive an award.
  • All nominations must have a nomination and a second to be valid. You cannot nominate yourself, nor can you nominate a team that you were part of (for example, if you were scum in FoL 99, you can’t nominate the FoL 99 scumteam for a group award; however, you could nominate a teammate for an individual award).
  • A minimum of 3 days must pass between a game ending and any nominations for that game.
  • All games that occurred at least in part in 2021 are eligible for awards. For this year only, there is also a “legacy” category, for games prior to 2021.
  • The deadline for nominations is one week after the last game that began in 2021 ends.
  • Once the nominations period is over, all relevant awards will be eligible for voting. Voting will be done via forum poll (the results will not be visible to anyone except forum moderators).

I nominate…

Marluxion/Chloe, and Maple/Ephemeral for Best Scum Performance, Group (Large Game) in Morphogenetic Mafia Thread A/Thread B

This game was a bit weird mechanically, given the “hydras, but not really, but also yes” nature of it, as there were two threads with 9 players each, and each slot had one player in each thread.

Both mafia slots properly utilized this to dominate thread control in the first thread, which caused a chokehold over the entire game. In the second thread, while they weren’t the dominant voices themselves, the wolves were strongly townread by every dominant voice, allowing them to still control the general narrative. This is all the more impressive when you consider that the second thread had multiple traditionally strong villagers.

Additionally, the mechanical play of the wolf team was extremely good – targetting a PR for nightkills every single night, and, despite a wolf being Jailkept N1, they never lost their cool, and continued doing their thing.

Both slots played exceptionally well in all these regards, and as a team. This is most evident if you read through the team chat, where there are literally thousands of messages between them. All four of them were bouncing off each other, both strategically and morally.

@Chloe for Most Dedicated/Enjoyable/Enthusiastic Player, and Best All-Around Player

“Dedicated, Enjoyable, Enthusiastic” are three words I think define Chloe extremely well, both inside and outside of the game.

Chloe has shown in every single game she’s played that she is not there to give it anything less than 100%. She will post hundreds, sometimes thousands of times… and these aren’t just one liners. While doing this, Chloe manages to consistently be the most enjoyable player in the game. Time and time again, she will be a shining beacon of good vibes. She is the life of the party, and brings it with her wherever she goes… while she herself, is also partying hard.

Now, while being all of these things, Chloe is very competent as both alignments. As a villager, she is able to consistently be found as one, letting her commonly become a town leader, which she is very capable of doing. Her WiM is consistently extremely high, and she is able to view the game from multiple angles, including some unique perspectives, which commonly allows her to have greater than average reads in these games.

As a wolf, Chloe has displayed the ability to shake off any struggles in her way and translate them into a scarily strong social game – and has proven to be capable of turning her strengths as a villager into a surprisingly capable wolf game.

All of these traits together just turn Chloe into a player who you want to play with, and you’ll enjoy it so much you might forget that you should be scared to play against her.

@Arete for Best Flavor

Whenever Arete is writing flavor for a game, you can consistently guarantee that the flavor will be worth reading. Whether it be good storytelling, or just amusing – commonly both – time after time, they’re able to consistently deliver on this front, always providing a high quality of flavor at the very least.

@eevee for Best Legacy Scum/Neutral Performance (Individual) in Enemy Within 4

Watching eevee play this game didn’t really feel fair. He was multiple steps ahead of the town at all times, not even using his converts until N5 and N8; because he simply didn’t need to use that.

Their mechanical play was incredible as well; protecting themselves from a vig shot N1, then preventing themselves from being cop checked later on, there’s a level of play that I don’t think very many people can replicate here.

Eevee was just playing his own game, and the rest of the players were his pawns, until it was too late.

@Wazza for Best Legacy Scum/Neutral Performance (Individual) in Rokugan FM

Was her role a bit overtuned? Yes, it absolutely was.

Does that discount how well she played in that game? No, I don’t think it does.

Wazza being able to convince half of the game to claim to some extent, via several different manipulative actions – all on D1 – is not a small order, especially with multiple people explicitly trying to stop her. also lying darkness funny

I nominate…
@jane for Funniest Moment in Minority Rule Royale Signups

As they made a post that was so funny that it rose the dead and got 60 likes. Smash Bros Ultimate might think “Everyone is Here!” but Jane proved they missed 60 people

oh we’re doing all in one post okay

I nominate @Icibalus for Best Use of PR for her use of her role in Clown Fiesta 2.

Ici used her access to the “spec chat” alt creatively by having Gorta “design” a wolf’s rolecard, which made him look very suspicious while also making the wolf look more confirmed as town (although she was more successful with the former).

I nominate @Wazza for Best Neutral/Third Party Performance for her play as Scorned in EFoL 4.75.

As Scorned, Wazza did an effective job of pushing agenda to get Marl, her first target, eliminated, without needing to resort to claiming a redcheck. This allowed her to gain credibility while simultaneously pushing her objective.

I nominate the Shortnight 2 scumteam (Litten, Centuries, and Grace) for Best Scum Performance, Group (Small Game).

The three of them effectively balanced powerwolfing and distancing to ensure that they always had control of the thread. They were able to miseliminate several traditionally un-mis-eliminatable players, such as Chloe. Ultimately, they swept, winning in final-7.

I’d like to nominate @min for Best Fakeclaim in Henry Stickmin Vig10er

Playing in a vanilla game with a single PR won’t lead to ‘fancy’ or outside-of-the-box plays, so while this action wasn’t anything particularly crazy, it still played a huge role in the outcome of the game; that being a town win.
In Henry Stickmin Vig10er, after noticing that the n1 shot was on somebody in their PoE, and somebody that not many players would have shot, min took the opportunity to claim vigilante and cover for the real one (myself), which served to remove themself from the PoE, absorb a nightkill, and also put the true vigilante in a position where they could make reads with knowledge that the wolves were fooled, and thus would be pushing agenda towards them.
By eating the nightkill, min practically forced a town win. The final wolf was up against a living PR and a player who was spewed green by association. The game was pretty much locked, and would not have been had the vigilante claimed the previous day and gotten killed by wolves.

Along with this, the fact that min stayed in the vig PoE until this point is notable as well. It’s quite easy for a VT to spew themselves as such, and narrow down the pool of possible PRs, but min did a fantastic job of not slipping, which made their claim much more believable.

They didn’t overdo it or come across as performative. Just a single line was enough to convince the wolves.

Good. Stuff.

Nominating eevee for best mechanic in Quantum Mafia.
That bot design would’ve taken… a long time.
And it’s incredibly innovative

I nominate Danganronpa 3 - Despair on the Ramparts hosted by @Apprentice and @Jane / @Icibalus and @Arete for Best Misc (Legacy)

We all knew this was coming. DR3 was a very enjoyable & memorable misc , and although part of that comes with being a DR, it still holds true, even among the Less Enjoyable :tm: parts. The final mystery was a very good concept. Although they didn’t solve it in the end, it’s very cool to have to solve a murder the Mastermind had committed before the game even started. The map was well-designed as well; only having 2 floors until the very end, and the 3rd floor being smol, was actually probably a good design decision. Overall, well-designed and enjoyable (for the period that I played, at the very least)

i suck at writing persuasive things help
can my second do a better job? find out next time! (this is your hint second)

I also nominate Danganronpa 5: Mirrored Embers for Best Misc
Most of this game was played in PMs, but you can access those through the Spec Discord with a bit of effort.

The great hosting, enticing lore, interesting mechanics, and top notch playerlist all culminated to create a game that several players outright didn’t want to kill as it’d mean they would have to stop playing the game sooner.

I could go on for hours about how many of the players simply wanted to hear more of the lore written, or how the unique ideas from the hosts allowed for a much more diverse experience from the previous forum danganronpa miscs… hell, even how the players themselves increased the quality of the game by adding their own roleplaying elements to it.

But I don’t really think I need to. I honestly think it all speaks for itself. I’m also lazy.

I will, however, note that the hosts worked with, and bounced off of the player’s roleplay and created backstories. This is most prevalent in the epilogue, but throughout the entire game there were traces of backstory created to reinforce what a player had said; this itself is most obvious in Trochilidae’s backstory, which he created quite a bit of on his own. And they did this all seamlessly, which is no small feat.

im also going to start doing 1 nom per post becasue i write a lot

I second this nomination. I was in this game and going against Eevee in the end there and was so fooled.

I would like to nominate Chloe for shooting a T/T thunderdome in vig10er, which lead to Marl sending all of his spiritual power to the rest of the town, which made town untree and start beating the crap out of scum with the power of dead deathtunnel villager and friendship

I also second this one… or uhh I guess I third this one… technically.

Min baited the scum kill towards them, pretty good stuff
