Gameplay

  • The uninformed majority in this setup is the Elves and the informed minority is the Humans.
  • The set-up is a 15 player set-up with 9 Vanilla Elves, 1 Elf Doctor, 1 Elf Motion Detector, 1 Elf 1-shot Vigilante (Cycle 2+), 1 Human Roleblocker, and 2 Human Goons.
  • Flips are alignment-only, and will not reveal the role. (They may reveal non-role-indicative parts of their flavor.)
  • No role can self-target. The Human Roleblocker may roleblock other Humans, but the Humans may not factional kill other Humans.
  • The Doctor cannot target the same player on two consecutive nights.
  • The Roleblocker cannot target the same player on two consecutive nights.
  • If the Vigilante’s kill is prevented or interfered with in any way (including being roleblocked, targeting a player protected by the Doctor, or targeting the Human nightkill target), their shot is NOT refunded.
  • Days are 48 hours unless majority is reached early and nights are 24 hours.
  • Executions are majority and plurality.
  • No-execute is a valid vote, and may be hammered to end the day early. In cases where no-execute and another vote are tied at the end of the day, no-execute will have priority in the rand. In all other cases of a tie, the execution will be determined at random from among the tied players.
  • Self-votes are considered valid votes.
  • Votes are locked in LyLo (execute-or-lose) scenarios, but not in MyLo (misexecute-and-lose) scenarios. That is to say, in situations where elves must execute correctly or lose, the first vote cast by a given player is final and cannot be changed.
  • All votes must be in the form /vote [name of player] to be considered valid, and all unvotes must be in the form /unvote. This is to enable the smooth processing of votes.
  • The Human factional kill is assigned. If the member performing the factional kill is not specified, the last member to submit a kill will be assumed to be performing it.
  • The Human factional kill is mandatory. If no factional kill is submitted, the kill will be determined randomly from among living Elves.
  • The Humans will communicate through a private Discord server or forum topic.

An excerpt from the most popular history textbook of the Province of Alva, typically used for children between the ages of forty and fifty.

Chapter 4: The Gold Rush

Introduction

Key Terms: Gold Rush, Battle of the Grove, Talion, Disguise Self, Ellimie Stonewhistle, Ellimie’s Sacrifice

Although it lasted for less than a decade, the “Gold Rush” period was among the darkest in Alva’s history. Beginning with the unsuccessful Alinar Invasion, a confederation of human kingdoms banded together in an attempt to seize control of Alva’s gold mines. Although Alvan diplomats indicated willingness to trade with the human kingdoms, the humans were unwilling to comply with such requests and sought to use military force.

After the human forces were defeated in the Battle of the Grove (see Chapter 3), due to their inferior technology and tactics, the human kingdom sent spies to infiltrate Talion, the town located near the largest gold mine in Alva. The humans intended to take over the government of Talion surreptitiously in order to smuggle gold out of Alva and into their empires. In order to aid their plan, they enlisted several low-level wizards, capable of casting Disguise Self. They kidnapped four citizens of Talion, held them captive, and assumed their occupations and other engagements.

Fortunately, their plan was hindered by the actions of Ellimie Stonewhistle (born 2597), one of the four residents of Talion taken prisoner. Unbeknownst to his captors, Ellimie was an apprentice wizard, and they were able to use his knowledge of arcana in order to escape and alert the other residents of Talion, allowing them to begin the process of identifying and eliminating the human spies from Talion. However, in retribution for his actions, his human impersonator killed them, in what is now known as Ellimie’s Sacrifice.

Practical Connection!

The Festival of Sacrifice was originally established in 2741 to honor Ellimie Stonewhistle. Although it has since expanded to include other heroes of Alva, aspects of Ellimie’s Sacrifice can be seen even in its current form. For example, the tradition of leaving small pebbles on one’s doorstep was initially created in Ellimie’s memory..

Try it at home!

Most likely, you have relatives or other adults in your life who remember the Gold Rush period! Try interviewing them about what they remember. Some questions you might ask are:

1. Do you remember the Alinar Invasion? How about the Battle of the Grove?
2. How did you feel when you first heard about the human infiltration of Talion? How did it affect your life? Did you start taking additional safety precautions as a result?
3. What did you think of the policies the Alvan provincial government implemented in response to the Alinar Invasion and Gold Rush?
